They are far too small to be an effective base for any sort of material that you would lay over the top of them to from a driveway. You will need something larger.
You don't want to go with rocks like lava rock. There are several reasons for this. One is that you don't want colored rock as the basis for your driveway. It will make the driveway turn out wrong. It could end up the driveway is discolored, but usually it is just that lava rock tends to be a little too big for the needs of a driveway project and beyond that it is much more expensive than the rock you'll want to use. This is because part of the reason people like lava rock is because it has a nice color to it and you won't see this if you use it as driveway gravel so why pay for it.
At the end of the day the best choice for your driveway gravel is simple medium sized gravel that is your basic gray color. There should be plenty of it to go around.
